A Fresh Start at the Glazer Center

Dear Friends,

Welcome back and thank you for your support over the last 18 months! Moving forward, we are excited to announce our partnership with the Nazareth School of Music at the Glazer Music Performance Center. Beston Hall, both gorgeous and acoustically excellent, will be our home base for three of this season’s five concerts and we will endeavor to add to the chamber music opportunities for the Nazareth students.

One of the lessons we learned, through your support over the past year, is the value of promoting and supporting our incredible local talent. Although this has always been a cornerstone of SCMR’s mission with the promotion of our local performers, we felt it was time to honor and highlight Rochester’s own established composers and young composers.

This first concert, A Fresh Start at the Glazer Center, features the world premiere of Jim Willey’s Oboe Quartet, written specifically for SCMR. Another local connection is the performance of Rochester-raised Matthew Lucia’s Bird Songs for flute, viola and harp, Op. 35. This piece was SCMR’s Composition Competition winner (high school level) and was scheduled for a previous performance we had to postpone due to the pandemic. For the first time we will perform a work by Grazyna Bacewicz: Trio for Oboe, Violin and Cello, which she wrote in 1934 in a beautiful neo-classical style. The first half closes with Sonata for Flute and Harp from the well-known film composer Nino Rota and this eclectic concert concludes with the wonderfully entertaining Chant de Linos by Jolivet. You won’t want to miss this diverse program!

The pre-concert chat is at 3:30pm and the performance begins at 4:00pm on 10/3. Please note, our COVID policy requires all audience members to be vaccinated and wear a mask. All musicians will be vaccinated.

Warmly,
Juliana Athayde and Erik Behr
Artistic Directors
