GUIDELINES FOR THE 2007-2008 HIGH SCHOOL COMPETITION

Eligibility

The competition is open to any student enrolled in grades 9 – 12 during the 2007-2008 school year in Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans or Wayne counties. Submissions from home-schooled students residing in the above counties are also welcome.

Instrumentation and Length

Submissions for the 2008-2009 competition should be no longer then ten minutes in duration for any combination of two to five instruments drawn from the following list: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, piano, violin (up to 2), viola, cello, bass, percussion, voice.

Submission

Applicants should submit: 1) Three copies of the score, 2) a completed official application form, 3) a teacher certification form,  4) a completed application checklist, and 5) a stamped self-addressed post card to confirm receipt of the manuscripts.  While not required, compact disc or cassette recordings of the composition may accompany the application.  Materials should be sent to:  Society for Chamber Music in Rochester, P.O. Box 20715, Rochester, New York 14602.  Anonymous submission:  The composer’s name is not to appear anywhere on the manuscript itself.

Composers may submit only one work, but teachers may recommend more than one composer.  Application and teacher certification forms may be obtained from the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester at the address given above or by contacting competition representative James Willey at (585) 243-3162 or by email at jwilley@frontiernet.net.

The Society for Chamber Music in Rochester assumes no responsibility for the safety of submitted materials. Submissions that do not comply with the above guidelines will be disqualified, as will scores not meeting reasonable professional standards of notation and legibility. Materials will be returned only if accompanied by a self-addressed mailer and sufficient postage.

Judging

Submissions will be judged for their originality, artistic promise, technical skill and effectiveness in performance. Decisions of the judges will be final.  The Society for Chamber Music in Rochester reserves the right to recommend that no award be given.  Decisions will be announced in June, 2008.  The winner must attend at least one rehearsal and the premiere of the composition during the 2008-2009 season.  Questions or requests for further information and or/forms should be directed to competition representative James Willey at (585)243-3162 or by email at jwilley@frontiernet.net.

GUIDELINES FOR THE 2007-2008 COLLEGE LEVEL COMPETITION

Eligibility

Students must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in music at a college or university located in Western New York.

Instrumentation and Length

Submissions for the 2008-2009 competition may be for any combination of two to five instruments drawn from the following list: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, piano, violin(s) (up to two), viola, cello, percussion, voiceCompositions may be up to 15 minutes in duration.

Submission

Applicants should submit three (3) scores by June 1, 2008.  The composer's name is not to appear anywhere on the manuscript score.  An envelope containing the composer's name, mailing address, phone number and email address (opt.) should be attached to the score. Submission of compact disc or cassette recordings is optional.

Composers may submit only one work.  The Society for Chamber Music in Rochester assumes no responsibility for the safety of submitted materials.
