Dvorak and Tyzik: Folk Music Inspirations

We return to Hochstein for a concert featuring a world premiere written by Rochester’s own Grammy-award winning composer and conductor extraordinaire, Jeff Tyzik. His Dance Suite for Oboe, Piano and String Quartet was written for Erik and SCMR during the later parts of 2020 as world events weighed heavily on us all and Jeff turned to composing as a creative outlet. The work is an inspiring piece that weaves folk melodies with his own unique harmonic language, which seamlessly melds the genres of jazz and classical together for a work that is already garnering national attention!

Our program begins with SCMR’s Composition Competition winning piece, Aaron Siebert’s The Sobbing of the Phoenix.  Written for saxophone quartet, this piece is an engaging work that portends more intriguing works from this young composer. We are especially proud that Aaron studied locally, at Nazareth and Eastman, and the performers are part of the esteemed saxophone studio at Eastman.

The second half of the program showcases Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81. This monumental and enduring work is a wonderful mixture of Dvořák's expressive lyricism combined with references to Czech folk music. Characteristically, those elements include styles and forms of song and dance, but not actual folk tunes; Dvořák created original melodies in the authentic folk style. Music you’ll be singing as you drive home for sure!

The Pre-concert chat is at 3:30 and concert begins at 4pm – we look forward to your company!

Warmly,

Erik and Juliana
